The idea behind this page is to help you sell Single Malt Whisky.  It is also believed that as you educate yourself and others in the Single Malt category that you will eventually realize and thus appreciate the uniqueness of "Glen Breton Rare"

 

The process is the process and assuming that a distillery has top grade equipment and training there are some key factors that can set one whisky apart from another.

  • Water used to make the whisky

  • Wood of the oak barrel that is going to allow the product to breath during its maturation

  • Environment surrounding the warehouse providing the subtle flavours and aromas that can't come from anywhere else

  • Climate of the region that can speed up or slow down the rate of maturation

  • Patience and trust to allow the magic of the warehouse happen

How Glenora is influenced:

  • The water used to make Glen Breton Rare flows down from the Mabou Highlands, over the granite and marble rock, and the roots of the maple and apple trees. 

  • The barrels are once used bourbon casks from the US that are shipped to us intact. 

  • The vegetation around the warehouses mostly consists of apple, and maple trees with scatterings of cedar and pine trees. 

  • Although the climate is ever changing during the winter months the grounds are snow covered and thus not freezing  cold and yet the summer provide warm but not humid conditions. 

  • Each year, not only the whisky matures so too does the warehouse.  It is evident today as you breath in the flavours of apple crisp within the warehouse.  

 

Common Terms

  • New Make – Clear unaged spirit

  • Whisk(e)y – Spirit aged 3+ years in Oak

  • Whisky - Canada & Scotland

  • Whiskey – The rest of the world including US & Ireland

  • Scotch – Whisky made & aged in Scotland

  • Bourbon – Whiskey made & aged in Kentucky with at least 51% corn

  • Blended Whisky –  More then one whisky from various grains and distilleries

  • Single Malt Whisky – Spirit made from Barley in Copper Pot Stills and is the product of one distillery

  • Pure Malt – 100% single malt, may come from several distilleries, taste may vary from year to year

  • Vatted Malt – Similar to “Pure” but more consistent in taste

  • Unchillfiltered – Whisky still containing haze causing oils that may otherwise be removed through chill filtering.

  •  Chillfiltering - Whisky is cooled to allow the oils congeal and then be filtered out. If served cold or with water or ice the whisky will retain its clear color.

How to serve single malt whisky?
To each his own however;

  1. A clean glass is a must.  There are a few accepted glass styles that are recommended as the "proper" glass however a common brandy snifter will do just fine or cup made of pottery helps retain the heat from your hand.

  2. A one ounce pour is a typical serving. 

  3. Try it first on its own before masking or enhancing the taste.

  4. Add a couple of drops of good clean water, give the glass a swirl and breath in the aroma. The heat from your hand will help enhance the aromatics and flavours. 

  5. Try and identify the nose before following up with a taste (not a drink), follow the first taste up with another and allow the whisky roll to the back of your tongue. Look for the aromas you identified in the nose in the taste. 

  6. The finish is what lingers beyond the taste.    Enjoy it

  • Good company and atmosphere should not be underestimated.

  •  If you really want to be adventurous warm the glass (with the whisky in it) in a bath of hot water before moving  onto step 3.
