Highlands Hiking Trails
MacKinnon
Brook Trail
This
is a level, coastal trail, and is the extension of Sight Point
Rd toward Mabou. The trail begins as a continuation of the road
and follows the coast. At 0.2 km the Sight Point Trail departs
left. From 3.0 km on several rockslides cross the old road.
These are crossed at your own risk and with extreme caution. The
trail ends on a back road to MacKinnon Brook. Turn left for
Maclsaac Glen Trail (1.5 km) and Mabou (11 km)
Distance:
3.5 km (1.5 hr) one way.
Access: Park (unobtrusively) at the end of Sight Point Rd
Sight
Point Trail
A
climb from the coast to the plateau. The trail weaves the
MacKinnon Brook Trail left and climbs through a stream valley.
It reaches the plateau at about 2 km. At 5 km the Maclsaac Glen
Trail leaves left. The trail ends on the road to the Cape Mabou
community pasture. Turn right for Mabou (11km) or left for Black
Brook Trail (1.6 km).
Distance:
7.5 (3 hrs) one way.
Access: From 200 m along MacKinnon Brook Trail, ending on the
MacKinnon Brook Rd.
MacDonald's
Glen Trail
A
walk along a stream valley. The trail follows a stream valley
down through the hardwoods to the road. Turn left for Mabou
Harbour (9 km) or right for the MacKinnon Brook Trail ( 1 . 5
km) .
Distance:
3.5 km (1 hr, 20 min) one way.
Access: From 5.0 km on the Sight Point Trail or from the
MacKinnon Brook Rd
Black
Brook Trail
A
trail up a river valley to the plateau. The trail follows the
Black Brook up through hardwoods for 3 km before a shift to soft
woods indicates the plateau has been reached. From trail end
turn right for the Sight Point Trail (1.6 km) and Mabou Harbour
(1.3 km).
Distance:
4.5 km (2 hr) one way.
Access: From Port Ban on the Sight Point Rd (where the road
crosses the brook) and from Cape Mabou community pasture
